Upcoming: An Evening of Kirtan, Ritual, Stories, and Images with visiting teacher Ramloti

“Shakti or the energy of the Divine Feminine is all around us constantly whether we are practicing yoga, meditating, chanting, sleeping, working or playing. Our awareness of this presence and how to work with it is very beneficial and brings deep peace and happiness to all spheres of our lives. This evening of Living the Divine Mother – The Shakti Within will highlight the main energies of Mother, delving into the meaning, how to cultivate it, honor it and will include chanting to each specific energy. The two-hour gathering will also include instruction on performing a simple puja and other devotional practices to Ma.” – Ramloti

Cost: Admission by donation. All proceeds, including sales of devotional items, books, t-shirts, and cd’s go to support the Babaji Ashram, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. To learn more visit www.Babajiashram.org

Happy New Year! January News

Happy New Year! January News

Dear Friends–

Happy 2012!  If you’re considering recommitting to your yoga practice this year, for some extra inspiration, check out this article by Meredith Walker, breaking down 77 surprising health benefits of consistent yoga practice.

This year marks our 10th year as a yoga studio! We’ll be celebrating that anniversary throughout the year in a variety of fun ways. In the mean time, I simply want to thank you for your support over any portion of the last decade.  I also want to thank all of you who participated in our community survey last month. We were encouraged  by the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the surveys and inspired by many of the ideas and constructive input you shared on how we can continue to support your yoga experience.

One of the common requests in the survey was for a wider variety of price options for classes.  We are excited to follow through on that request starting this month. In addition to January specials we’re running this month (New local students $60 for 10 classes; all students: 10 classes for $108), we now offer a 5 class pass, a monthly unlimited pass, a 6 month pass, and a one year yoga pass- in addition to our school/university, Americorps-Vista, senior, military, and New Orleans Food Co-Op discounts. Please visit here to see all the new price details. We also continue our emphasis on making yoga affordable and accessible to the community through our $7 community discount classes throughout the week, and weekly Wednesday night sliding scale donation classes at both studios.

Below, please check out the variety of events we have this month including a slate of Intro To Yoga Courses starting soon; our 10 week Building An Integrative Yoga Practice Course; inspiring workshops with my dear friend Jasmine Tarkeshi, co-founder of Laughing Lotus Yoga; New Year breathwork with Jack Fontana; and respected visiting teacher Sarah Powers.

Finally, with excitement for the Saints playoff run, I want to leave you with a sweet image– a photo that we’ve shared on occasion in the past. Drew Brees teaching children meditation at a local school.  Who dat!

A rare hometown concert!

New Orleans world music trio Sean Johnson and The Wild Lotus Band (Alvin Young and Gwendolyn Colman) is celebrated as one of the leading voices in western kirtan music. Their music has been sold in Whole Foods stores nationwide. The band appears on Putumayo World Music’s recently released compilation Yoga and is signed to Nettwerk/Nutone Records, home of Sarah McLaughin, Barenaked Ladies, Krishna Das, and Jai Uttal. They headline festivals and conferences worldwide and are the first kirtan band to ever play The New Orleans Jazz Festival.

Head to the Downtown Studio for a rare hometown concert with studio owner and acclaimed teacher Sean Johnson

“Perhaps the most powerful version of “I’ll Fly Away” at Jazz Fest came from Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band. As he droned it as a private dirge in the Lagniappe Stage, his intensity silenced the talkers.” – Alex Rawls, Offbeat Magazine

“Sean Johnson And The Wild Lotus Band’s music will ignite the world! A hybrid of East and West that will bring joy to your heart and get your body boogieing!” – Yoga Chicago Magazine

“They have reinvented the ancient tradition of kirtan into an undoubtedly American sound.”- Elephant Journal

“A joy to listen to whether you’re a yogi or anyone who appreciates wildly creative music.”- Yoga Journal

Meet AC:
“To me yoga is a place where doing meets being, where the borders between mind, body, and spirit melt. As a creative writer, I am especially interested in how the practice of yoga affects and nourishes our creative lives, how yoga feeds the creator inside all of us, banishing doubt and judgment so that everything we do can be an expression of the pure, luminous, and inspiring true self within.”
