Two weekends ago we finished the final session of our 9 month Soul School Teacher Training which I guided with my friend Mitchel Bleier. We had an amazing group of people in the program who challenged themselves to deepen their practice, to mine their body and imagination, and dare to open their voices as teachers. It was an awesome process and the community bonded deeply. On the last night, one of our trainees Cat invited the whole group to have a celebratory party in the outdoor patio of her family’s restaurant Parkway Bakery and Tavern in Mid-City. It was a beautiful evening with clear open sky and a gentle breeze. Waiting for us on a big table were abundant platters of delicious po-boys, including Parkway’s yummy caprese vegetarian po-boys alongside hardier NOLA classics. Every 15 minutes or so, a raspy voice would fill the air from the same loud speaker that announced when an order was ready, and warmly shout: “Hey y’all, we wanna’ congratulate the Wild Lotus Yoga graduates of 2012. Yeah, you right.” With a cold beer in hand, I took a moment to step back and watch all the trainees, with their families and fellow graduates, laughing and celebrating together. Looking on, I smiled deeply and gratefully, savoring the incredible combination of two of my greatest loves: yoga and New Orleans! Perhaps a more austere yogi wouldn’t understand, but in my heart they go so perfectly together.
Hope y’all are having a wonderful Jazz Fest season! After the last notes of Jazz Fest have sounded, we’ve got some sweet events planned for you including 6 week intro to yoga courses; Farah’s happy hour flow class with live DJ Tom Harvey; and a couples yoga workshop with me that makes a great date! We also have a fun contest happening this month coinciding with a special on our “Super Yogi’ monthly unlimited card- the two students who purchase the card and take the most classes in May each get a free pass to The Telluride Yoga Festival, in the magnificent mountains of Colorado. Third place wins a Manduka pro mat.
Speaking of yoga and New Orleans, local yoga teacher Brooke Bailey has created a wonderful web resource for the New Orleans yoga community called Yoga Lagniappe.com featuring all things yoga in New Orleans. In honor of the Jazz Fest season, she asked me to share some thoughts on yoga and music and my own journey weaving the two. You can read the interview here.
